The Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) is the gateway to your residence permit — and the first appointment is often the most stressful.

• Bring a translator friend (or hire one) if your German isn't strong
• Cash for fees — many offices don't take cards
• Arrive 15 minutes early; lines start before doors open
