Tips for your first Termin at the Ausländerbehörde
The Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) is the gateway to your residence permit — and the first appointment is often the most stressful.
What did you wish you'd known before yours? Common tips I've heard:
- Print everything, even if they say digital is fine
- Bring a translator friend (or hire one) if your German isn't strong
- Cash for fees — many offices don't take cards
- Arrive 15 minutes early; lines start before doors open
- Bring water, snacks — appointments can run long
- Take a friend for emotional support if you can
